Stranraer Scotland Vacations – Useful Info
The country of Scotland is a fantastic place in which to take a couple of weeks vacation. The country is perfect for a magnificent amount of varied vacations, with extensive expanses of lovely countryside with plentiful amounts of sites of outstanding natural beauty (perfect for mountain climbers, hill-walkers, ramblers, hikers and the likes). The nation also has some of the most popular visitor attractions, including, some of the most fascinating galleries and museums in the whole of the UK, breathtaking sites, historical buildings, castles, fortified houses and country homes plus a great deal more. In the following article I discuss the town of Stranraer.
Stranraer located in the south of Scotland in the district of Dumfries and Galloway, it is known widely for being where you can sail to Belfast in Northern Ireland. Regrettably the larger number of tourists do not get to investigate the visitor attractions in the surrounding countryside and the town itself. This fact is something of an enigma, if you arrive at the town, and book yourself a room in a Stranraer bed and breakfast, a day or two earlier you can get to visit a selection of the visitor attractions prior to sailing to Northern Ireland and the city of Belfast.
There are a number of places to see in the port of Stranraer including the Castle of St John (a medieval tower house) situated in the heart of the town. The castle was constructed at the very start of the sixteenth century as a home for Ninian Adair of Kilhurst (the Laird of Wigtownshire). The structure was renovated, in nineteen eighty eight/eighty nine, by the district council of Wigtown who opened it to the public in nineteen ninety.
Another visitor attraction near to the town of Stranraer is Castle Kennedy Gardens. The castle acts as the centrepiece of the garden which are located on a hill between 2 lochs( it is important to know that it is no longer possible to visit the ruins. The landscaped gardens covers an area of 75 acres. If you want it is possible to purchase plants from the shop which has propagated them from seeds collected in the gardens.
Another attractive visitor attraction worth visiting is Glenluce Abbey, about seven miles from Stranraer. Even though the abbey is in ruins( in truth the most ruined of 3 of monasteries situated in this region of Scotland) it features a spectacular fifteenth-century Chapter House. Other places worth visiting include, Port Logan, Portpatrick, the Machars and the Mull of Galloway.
If you are thinking about a vacation in Scotland you will be pleased to learn that there are a fair few Stranraer hotels. Please take a look at our comprehensive listings of Stranraer hotels and guest house accommodation.
